FlipZees™ magnifying makeup glasses herald a new era of makeup application for women over 40, with a unique double nose bridge design that allows them to be worn ‘upside down’ giving access to the full eye area. This revolutionary design solves the age-old makeup problem faced by millions of women around the world – being unable to see close enough to do your makeup.
Female Entrepreneurs Donna, who is and electricain and Andrea who works in fashion invented the glasses one day whilst sat around the kitchen table. They started by making prototypes from the nearest materials to hand – which happened to be electrical wiring! Then moved on to cutting up cheap reading glasses in their quest for the perfect magnifying make-up glasses. Eventually after two years – FlipZees were born.

What made you decide to start your business and become a female entrepreneur?
We faced a problem shared by nearly 25% of women over the age of 40. Needing reading glasses to see close-up, we couldn’t do our makeup as well as we did when we were younger because our glasses got in the way. Yet without them we couldn’t see! Unable to find the perfect solution, we created FlipZees™ magnifying makeup glasses.
What was the process of turning your idea into reality?
We spent many evenings and weekends sat around the kitchen table developing ideas and prototypes. Friends were roped in to test and provide feedback. Luckily, we found the right manufacturer to help us develop our product. Agreeing the brand name, trademarking and protecting our designs was another area which took time. Eventually two and a half years after we started the process, the first delivery of FlipZees™ arrived!
What ways have you marketed your business and which has worked the best for you?
At the moment FlipZees™ are a side hustle for both of us. Having a small marketing budget and limited time, we turned to social media such as Facebook and Instagram as through these channels it’s possible to reach a targeted audience relatively cheaply. However, we are still learning! The best approach so far has been a Giveaway offer which we will follow up after the draw takes place.
We have been featured in a number of blogs and see new followers daily.
Friends and family have also been great advocates for the brand – there’s nothing like seeing our product demonstrated to make a sale!
What’s the one thing you wished you knew at the beginning of your journey?
That the hard work starts once the product arrives in your warehouse.
What’s your daily workday like?
Since we both work – Donna is an electrician running her own business and Andrea works full time as a fashion buyer for a large UK retailer – we have to make time to fit FlipZees ™ around other commitments. So this means first thing in the morning, lunchbreaks, evenings and weekends. We are two busy women!
Have you got a favourite quote or mantra that keeps you going?

If you could offer one piece of advice to the ladies out there thinking of starting or just starting their entrepreneurial journey what would it be?
Go for it. Otherwise you’ll always wonder what if…
If you could have the help of anyone who would it be?
Another pair of arms and legs each would be helpful plus 4 more hours a day!! Seriously though, social media marketing seems to change on a daily basis so it would be amazing to have an experienced adviser and manager in this area.
What’s the ultimate goal for yourself and your business?
Our vision is to give women over 40 a shorter and more polished makeup routine, to be a well known brand and ultimately see FlipZees ™ stocked in high street retailers.
